How did they decorate houses in Los Angeles in the past?

When designer Ryan Jackson first saw this Los Angeles mansion, he immediately warned the future owners: “If you don’t like 1980s Hollywood chic, this house may not be for you.” Luckily, his clients — famous hairstylist Umberto Savone and his wife Babette Beja-Savone — adore the glow of glamour.

The beauty empire they created, built around the famous Umberto salon on Canon Drive in Los Angeles, has been synonymous with chic in Beverly Hills for decades. So it’s only logical that the interiors of their home reflect glossy (sometimes literally) Californian luxury.

The interiors of the house were designed in 1999 by renowned Chicago decorator Richard Himmel. This is one of his last projects, and it contains all the hallmarks of the master’s style. From the street, the mansion is almost invisible, disappearing behind palm trees and hedges. But as soon as you get inside, you are imbued with a sense of the grandeur of its spaces, the materiality of its textures and luxury.
