A striking example of the postmodern style is the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, located in Los Angeles. It was built in 2002 and since its opening has been the main Catholic cathedral in the city.
Previously, the Cathedral of Saint Viviana was located on its site, its building was completely destroyed during the earthquake of 1994. The author of the project for the new cathedral was the Spanish architect Rafael Moneo. The architecture of the building is notable for the complete absence of sharp corners, the cathedral is also distinguished by its impressive size. Its height is about 30 meters, and the length of the building is 101 meters.
Since its foundation, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels has been a multifunctional religious center. It houses a mausoleum, and several special niches for burials and crypts have been equipped. The walls of the cathedral contain the tomb of the famous actor Gregory Peck. The new postmodern cathedral is usually considered as a single complex with the nearby Chapel of Saint Viviana, on the territory of which her tomb has been preserved.
The new cathedral has a spacious courtyard with a picturesque park, decorated with original sculptures of animals. The unique cathedral in Los Angeles is so large that up to 3,000 parishioners can be accommodated within its walls at one time. It is distinguished not only by its original appearance, but also by its very beautiful interior design. At the central entrance to the cathedral there are luxurious bronze doors with engravings, and the main decoration of the central hall is a statue of the Virgin Mary.
